So this week I got hip to Princess Nokia. She recently dropped her third mixtape, 1992 Deluxe, featuring songs Bart Simpson, Saggy Denim, and G.O.A.T. I had heard her name before and seen a few pictures, and seeing her pictures I always thought to myself how cool she seems, but I didn't really realize she was an artist. Listening to 1992 Deluxe was my first time listening to her music and I instantly vibed with it. She has her own sound, which I love, and her individuality and creativity really stands out on each track.
If you're looking for some new music to listen to I definitely recommend you check out Princess Nokia's music for yourself, and follow her on IG @princessnokia to stay tuned for what she does next!

This week as I was looking for some new music to listen to, I came across Lizzo and then I wondered why this was my first time hearing of her! Lizzo is a singer/rapper with roots from Minneapolis, Houston, and my hometown, Detroit. After joining a group called The Cornroll Clique, Melissa Jefferson became Lizzo, meshing perfectly with her group members Lexo, Nino, and Zeo. In 2011 Lizzo moved to Minneapolis and joined a TLC-style girl group called The Chalice. Finally, in 2013 she released her debut album, Lizzobeats.
Check out LIzzo's latest single "Water Me" below! This song is so hype and the visuals are positive and vibrant. To see more from Lizzo, visit her website:

So this was the result of my very first photoshoot, as a photographer and stylist! The black and gold dresses were from Goodwill, I just re-vamped them (see my thrift finds tab!), and the white dress is one that I made for a fashion show last year. I had planned to do the shoot with my camera (an old Lumix that I hardly ever use), but after a few shots I ended up doing it all on my phone. Later on I edited the pictures on VSCO. I feel like for my first time doing this, the shots came out pretty good, even before I edited them. This was also my model's first time modeling in a photoshoot, so I had to coach her a little bit, but I'm happy with our results! We all have that one song that instantly gets us hype and relieves all of our stress, right? My new song is Bodak Yellow! For some reason it took me a minute to get hip, but I've been blasting it all week long and I feel unstoppable! I seriously feel so inspired listening to this song, like I need to go somewhere and get my bands up, cut off my (nonexistent) boyfriend, buy a new wig, and go out for a drink with my girls! Thank you Cardi ❤️ -Comment Below and let me know what your hype song is! I found this Asian-inspired dress at my local Goodwill last week and honestly, I didn't do anything except make the slit higher because it's already so pretty! This dress was included in my first photoshoot also and like I said...pics coming soon! Stay tuned :)
Soo... another year has passed by where I have not been able to attend Afropunk Fest. And while this does make me sad inside, my heart just warms up at the pictures of what those who did attend wore. I swear every time I see pics from Afropunk there are at least a couple looks that make me gasp and question what my life is. Like honestly, seeing Black people express themselves in the ways of fashion, you will see soooo many different things, and the creativity never ceases to amaze me! So anyway, here are some of my favorite looks from Afropunk Brooklyn 2017, via the internets!
One thing I always look forward to when visiting my grandma (who I call Mugga) is breaking out the old family photo albums. Not only do I look to take in the memories and learn about family members I've never met, more than anything else, I look at the clothes! Being the fashion -slash- history nerd that I am, I can't help but take in every detail of the silhouettes, fabrics, colors, and other style factors of the times. Besides, nothing speaks through pictures like an outfit; that's what tells the story, and gives the vibe of the time and place in which the photo was taken. Looking at these old pictures I can tell how smooth my great-grandfather was, or how classy my grandma has always been. I can only hope the pictures my grandkids and great-grandkids find of me will be as intriguing.
